Holiday Gift Guide for Teenage Girls 2017

Buying gifts for teenage girls can definitely be a difficult task during the holiday season. I know, I have one! Is it on trend? Is it cool? Will she like it? A few of my friends reach out to me every year to gather gift ideas for their teenage girls. Last year, my daughter and I had so much fun creating the 2016 Holiday Gift Guide for Teenage Girls that we sat down together and created the NEW 2017 edition!

For reference, my daughter, Grace, is 15 years old and these are the gift ideas that she highly recommends!

SHOES

The slip-on sneaker trend has been a popular one for women of all ages this year, and teenage girls are definitely loving it, too. Grace actually has these Steve Madden Slip-on Shoes and wears them all of the time. She says, "I love them because they are easy to put on and go with almost every outfit."

PS. She said the Vans are cool, too.

As far as athletic shoes, the black Nike's were all the rage last year. This year, she loves the retro Adidas Shoes like the ones pictured below. She wears hers with everything from jeans and joggers to skirts and dresses.

CLOTHES

Jean jackets have been popular for many years. This Denim Jacket with the faux shearling collar is much warmer than your regular jean jacket and is perfect for a cold day in the mid-west. Grace thinks the fuzzy collar adds a "cool, wintery vibe."

Last year, it was all about the leggings. This year, it's all about the joggers. Grace loves joggers because they are "super comfy" and she can wear them to create a sporty or casual, everyday look. Nordstrom has a so many joggers in stock right now, and she likes these BP Joggers because they are comfortable and stylish.

Grace actually has these Rue21 Joggers pictured below, and they are only $10. So, hurry up and grab a few pair for your teenage girl.

ACCESSORIES

Pendant necklaces layered over t-shirts and sweaters are still popular with my teen, but right now Grace is all about gold and rose gold. She loves these stackable rings because you can stack them together on a few different fingers to create a "fun look". This 10-pack of Rings is only $12.99 so it's an inexpensive way for your teen to try out the trend.

Most teen girls have their cell phones close by at all times, and every girl needs to have a cute case. Grace found this adorable phone case from a shop on Etsy. She loves this one because it's "girly and trendy." (PS. The Etsy shop she found is so cool that I would love any one of the phone cases found on the site.)

If you are looking for a fun gadget-type gift for your teenage girl, these polaroid type cameras are a great gift because the photo immediately comes out of the camera - Hello Instant Gratification! Yes, they still take a lot of selfies, but they also love posting these small polaroid photos on bulletin boards or on collages in their rooms.

I know Kate Spade is expensive, especially for a teenage girl, but during the holidays I tend to splurge. Grace loved the Kate Spade wallet she received last year. Because of her love for rose gold this year, she thinks this Kate Spade watch and this Rose Gold purse are beautiful!

Tip: I always buy the Kate Spade when it's 30% off which is usually a few times a year. Sign up to receive their emails.

Beauty Items

Her love of rose gold this year can be carried over into beauty items, too. If your teen is tired of wearing a basic neutral on her nails, but wants a color to go with every outfit, try these pretty options below.

Essie makes a pretty one called Penny Talk.

OPI makes a lighter colored version in Worth a Pretty Penne.

At 15, Grace still doesn't wear a lot of makeup, but for special occasions she'll create a soft, natural makeup look. If I had to pick one makeup brand that she loves - it's Too Faced. (Thank you - Kandee Johnson!). Kandee Johnson, a popular You Tuber that all of the teenage girls love, partnered with Too Faced and created a pretty collection of makeup geared towards teenage girls. Below is the I Want Kandee Candy Eyeshadow Palette.

Too Faced also had another big launch this year which was their Peach Collection starring the Peach Perfect Foundation and the Just Peachy Velvet Mattes Eyeshadow Palette.  All of the items in the collection have a sweet peach smell that's not too overpowering and colors that can match any skin tone.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of our picks this year. I hope you found this helpful - Happy Holiday shopping!!!

What are You Wearing on the 4th?

I love the patriotic spirit that many Americans show on the 4th of July. Whether you are enjoying the day on a boat, swimming at the beach, fishing on the lake, BBQing by the pool or just sitting in a park watching fireworks, here are a few fun pieces I think would work for any 4th of July function you might have.

You can probably create a look from the clothing items you already have in your closet, but sometimes it's fun to add one new shirt or accessory. Check out these fun sunglasses (similar pair) I wore last year!

I wish you all a happy and safe 4th!

Old Navy Haul & Try On

Have you been to Old Navy lately? I popped in the other day and found so many cute pieces that I had to share. If you want an inexpensive way to try the off-the-shoulder trend, this floral shirt is only $14 and looks great paired with denim shorts and jeans.

I also found this lightweight cardigan in a gray, oatmeal color. It's perfect to throw on over a tank top or sleeveless shirt. I paired it with my favorite Madewell sleeveless t-shirt and my 7 For all Mankind cut-off shorts.

I also picked up this long, black maxi skirt that is a must have for summer. It's a great piece to wear traveling, as a coverup at the beach or just running errands during the day.

This black top is my favorite purchase of the trip because it's a little edgy, but doesn't show too much skin. Love it paired with white jeans.

If you go to Old Navy, let me know what you get. Tag me on Instagram @thehipchickonline, I would love to see how you wore it.

Living in the Land of 10,000 Lakes

Living in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" has been great fun for my family and I. In fact, some say you haven't really had the full Minnesota experience if you haven't spent time at the lake. I agree! We've recently taken our buddy, Jack, out one of the smaller lakes and he loves it.

The weather has been perfect; hot during the day and a little cool at night. Here are a few outfits I've worn on the boat. The dark, denim shorts are from White House Black Market, the super soft boyfriend button-down shirt is from Old Navy (only $15) and the hat was a gift from my wonderful sister-in-law by Vineyard Vines that is a special Kentucky Derby edition.

I bought this Leith Tank dress at Nordstrom, and I love that it's so versatile. It comes in 6 other colors, too. I paired it with a distressed white denim jacket that I picked up at Evereve and these comfortable Via Spiga slip-on shoes which are perfect for boating.

I hope your summer is off to a great start!

Floral Prints and Leather Jackets

It's finally starting to feel like spring in Minnesota, and one of the spring trends I'm loving right now is pairing floral prints with a leather jacket. The other day, I wore this floral top with my brown leather jacket over it and loved the delicate details of the floral print with the edge of the leather jacket.

I'm on the hunt right now for a new floral dress. I think these two from Banana Republic are cute options. (Right now, Banana Republic is having a sale!) I think this floral pleat-trim fit-and-flare dress would look really good paired with a black moto jacket.

And I think this longer floral pleated maxi dress would look great paired with a brown moto jacket.

Tip for Wearing a Blanket Scarf

There are so many cute blanket scarves on the market right now, and since it's after the holidays, most of them are on sale. If you feel like the scarf is too bulky because they are really big, here is a great TIP - Cut the blanket scarf in half. Yes, it sounds scary, but seriously you just cut it on a diagonal so it makes 2 large triangles. I give one half to my daughter and keep the other half for myself. You will be a little more limited in your styling options, but it's definitely less bulky when worn the traditional way.

I bought this one from Evereve for under $30.

Here is another cute one for under $20 on Amazon.

Let me know if you try it.

Gift Guide for a Teenage Girl

Last week, my college girlfriends and I were all on a group text chatting about our upcoming holiday plans. We all have kids in the 12-18 year old range, and one of them asked if I had any ideas on what I was going to get my teenage daughter for Christmas. So, I put together a list of everything my 14 year old loves and thought I would share it with all of you.

BEAUTY ITEMS:

I think all teenage girls should be on some sort of skin care routine - get them to start washing their face every morning and night. This Clinique 3 step kit is a great one to get your teenager into this daily habit.

LUSH - you haven't heard of LUSH? I'm sure you will soon enough. My daughter and many other teenage girls are obsessed with anything Lush. My daughter's favorite is the Yoga Bath Bomb. You drop this bomb into a warm bath; it fizzes and turns into pretty colors while you are soaking in the tub.

Trust me when I say you need to go ahead and buy one of these for yourself! The Beauty Blender is a must for any teenager or woman who wears makeup. I've tried a few "dupes" on the market and nothing compares to the original Beauty Blender. Applying makeup with this sponge will make any liquid foundation look flawless.

Even if the teenage girl you are buying for doesn't wear a lot of makeup, they all seem to love lipgloss. I love this NYX lipgloss set because all of the colors are very wearable, which rarely happens in a holiday set.

ATHLETIC ITEMS:

Most teenagers are very active and mine lives in athletic wear. My daughter's favorite sports bra is this one by Nike. She says this one is "super comfortable" because she can adjust the straps. It also comes in a variety of colors.

Water bottles are popular with teenage girls and boys. Swell and Yeti are the most popular brands and guest what? They really work! We tested it and it stayed cold for many hours.  My daughter loves the Swell bottle, while my 16 year old son loves the Yeti cup. Make sure you only wash these by hand.

You can't go wrong with a pair of Nike or Adidas shoes for any teenager. My daughter and her friends love the plain black ones, and they come in so many colors. Can you believe Adidas is making a comeback? I had a pair of these white ones many, many years ago... (I bet you did, too.) :-)

A huge trend for teenage girls is athletic leggings. (They wear them a little differently than I do because I like to cover my rear, but that's beside the point.) My daughter is on the small side barely hitting 5 ft tall so she can still fit in a girl's size at Ivivva (part of Lululemon) or can wear 2/XXS in Lululemon. Trust me when I say, you can't go wrong with leggings.

ACCESSORIES:

I'm assuming the teenage girl you are buying for already has a phone. It seems like they are all taking selfies for snapchat, instagram or the newest social media site. So, in addition to the phone, they like accessories for their phones - cases, headphones and portable chargers. My daughter loves her Beats headphones and says they "look cool" and cancel out all the noise especially when she's on a plane.

With winter quickly approaching and depending on where you live, your teenager might enjoy a new coat. We live in Minnesota so a warm coat is a MUST! We just bought this coat for my 14 year old the other day and she likes because "it's not too puffy and the fur on the hood is not itchy." You can't go wrong with a North Face coat or jacket.

My daughter currently has a Vera Bradley wallet and has enjoyed it for many years. This year for Christmas, she's asking for a Kate Spade Wallet and I think this one is cute and it's on sale!

Last but not least is to get your teenager a great pair of snow boots. Again, depending on where you live, your teen might not need these, but if you have a chance of snow in your area or you are planning a ski vacation, warm snow boots are a great gift. My daughter and I both own these Sorel boots  (except mine have fur) and we LOVE them!

I hope this gave you some ideas for your teenage girl. Wishing you all a Happy Holiday season!
